Saudi divorces wife for watching male TV host

I just can't believe this..
RIYADH - A Saudi man divorced his wife for watching alone a television programme presented by a male, an act he deemed immoral, the Al Shams newspaper reported on Saturday.

The man, whom the paper did not identify, ended his marriage on the grounds his wife was effectively alone with an unrelated man, which is forbidden under the strict Islamic law enforced in the ultra-conservative kingdom, the paper said.

Men in Saudi Arabia have the authority to divorce their wives without resort to the courts.

Prayers from us

Ramadhan has always been the month that every muslim in the world waiting for. It’s a special month for us n followed by the celebration of eid. Many unfortunate incidents do happen during this holly month though some of us try hard to avoid it. Accidents, lost of people that we love, divorced n a lot more.

We have one close family friend (Proffessor Iskandar & family) that we knew since they moved to Oman n now has moved again to Al-Ain, UAE 2 months ago. We got the news that Prof has been admitted to hospital since 3 weeks ago. He had undergone three operations n now still in the recovery stage.

I still remembered during the last ramadhan when they are still here, his wife – Proffessor Jamaliah had her 2nd stroke. Now ‘kakak prof’ is still in the recovery process. She does looks healthy n eating well except that she can’t talk n walk. She’s on the wheel chair.

I can feel and imagine the feelings n situations that the whole family has to go thru. Luckily they have four sons that they can rely on. I have seen how those four brothers especially Udik n Uci really did a good job taking care of their mom n now their dad.

I pray to Allah n wish that Prof will recover soon n can celebrate the Eid. I also hope that everybody in the family will give support to each other n be very strong. Sesungguhnya segala yang berlaku itu ada hikmahnya.
This picture was taken during our last ramadhan (2006). This was the night before kakak prof (dress in pink) had her scond stroke. Prof is standing behind third from right.

Anyone for cendol?

Yesterday had been my extremely busy day. I and my three dearest friends had ventured a ‘big’ project. We made cendol! Yes. Believe it or not.. we had succeeded with a full big basin of cendol.

Now I know how hard it is to make cendol. At first we thought that we gonna fail as a few trial it turned up not as cendol but as watery jelly. But we didn’t give up. After a few trial n error n more patience we finally did it! Well maybe not as good as the one u can find in Malaysian market but kira ok lah kat Muscat ni..

At the same time we made kuih cara. We spend hours in the morning to make these two super delicious Malay delicacies. So yesterday was our best iftar.. ala-ala kedai mamak gitu.. We had kuetiaw kerang with my special cili jeruk n cendol, kuih cara for our desserts. Doesn’t that a good combination? Ehem…. nyam nyam..

The Making of Kuetiaw

Kuetiaw… everybody’s favourite. Name it – kuetiaw kerang, char kuetiaw, kuetiaw sup or any kind of kuetiaw, you’ll love it. Here in Oman, you can never find the kind of white kuetiaw like in Malaysia. If u really yearns for it, u can substitute it with a kind of green pasta that more or less like kuetiaw. But still that doesn’t give u the ‘ummph’.

Today after hours standing in front of the stove, I have succeeded in the making of kuetiaw. Actually this is my 2nd trial. The first one failed because I used the local flour. It only works with the rice flour from Thailand. I am so happy n proud that finally I managed to do it.

It is really worth the efforts.. This kuetiaw will be my special dish for our Iftar tomorrow.

Happy Birthday to my dear brother

Today is my little youngest brother’s birthday. But his birthday today is not as small as the word ‘little’. He’s 28 years old today. Still single n available..

I wish him all the best in whatever he do n may all his dreams come true. Moga Allah S.W.T memberkati dan melindungi serta murahkan rezekinya selalu.

I also wish that he will soon find his life partner. Helloo anybody out there…. If you have sisters, cousins, friends who’s seeking for a life partner.. get to know my bro here. He’s a handsome n cheerful guy. Easy to get a long.. yang penting dia ni kerja gomen :)… (promo ni..)

Happy Birthday Boy. Lot’s of love from all of us in Muscat.
p/s: will try to put in the video again for u. internet connection over here is super damn slow!

Did Sunita Williams Converted to Islam?

It has been spread around that Sunita Williams, an Indian origin astronaut who returned to the earth after her 197 days stay on satellite space station along with her other four crew members had converted to Islam.

Here is the story behind the convertion what is coming from the sources although officially it is not declared so far. When the astronauts were taking photographs of earth from the space satellite with the help of powerful telescope they found the complete earth as dark except the two places on the earth i.e Mecca and Madinah, two famous historically rich cities of Saudi Arabia.

The pictures of Mecca and Madinah from satellite is given below. It looks very interesting and nothing but miracle. Although the acceptance of Islam by Sunita Williams is not so far confirmed by any authenticated source but the pictures they took from satellite was very interesting and definitely a miracle.

British woman is divorcing bin Laden’s son

Remember in my previous post about the British woman marrying Osama Laden's son? Now they are divorcing..

LONDON — A British woman who married a son of Osama bin Laden says the couple are divorcing because of opposition from his family, The Sun newspaper reported on Wednesday.

Jane Felix-Browne, a 51-year-old grandmother from Moulton, a village in northwestern England, married Omar bin Laden, 27, in both Egypt and Saudi Arabia in April. But Felix-Browne said, according to The Sun, that bin Laden’s family members feel they have been humiliated. The newspaper quoted her as saying her husband had been threatened in a telephone call, but she did not identify the caller or give details about the threat.

“Omar was told he shouldn’t be married to me, and there was a very good chance he would be taken to prison,” The Sun quoted her as saying. “Omar knew who it was on the phone, but he wouldn’t tell me. After the call he said he felt both our lives were in jeopardy.”

She could not be reached for comment Wednesday morning.
“People are opposed to my marriage because I am British. I wasn’t prepared to see the man I love die,” she was quoted as saying.

“It was a really, really good marriage, a strong marriage. But I cannot stand by and watch my beloved husband die before my very eyes.

“The bin Laden family are afraid of the political implications of a British woman being married to the son of Osama bin Laden. They fear embarrassment and complications, not just in their own country but also in Britain and America,” Felix-Browne was quoted as saying.

The Sun quoted Omar bin Laden also as saying “this marriage is now over.” “I don’t want a divorce, but there are serious reasons for this breakup that I can’t talk about,” The Sun quoted him as saying. “I adore being with this woman. But we can’t stand up when the waves from the sea are coming to wipe us out.”

Experimenting Kuih Tradisional

I love to eat kuih melayu tradisional. Every time when I go back to Alor Setar I always make an attempt to buy lots kind of kuih. Especially kat simpang PKNK n Jalan Day.. It’s so delicious. Now when I am away, especially during Ramadhan I always miss those kuih. I miss Pasar Ramadhan. We can buy lots of colourful kuih.. Just to filled up your table.. nafsu tu sebenarnya!

This is why I started to learn how to make kuih melayu. It’s not easy though u have all the recipes. I bought all kind of recipes books, asking n begging recipes around from friends n digging the recipes from the internet, but still that can’t guarantee your kuih will turn out perfectly.

Yesterday I had tried to make kuih talam pandan. I love to eat all sorts of kuih talam n bengkang. I took the easiest recipe which only use the ingredients that easy to get here in Oman. It is a 2 layer kuih that you have to steam layer by layer. In the morning, I had prepared n mixed all the ingredients. By the afternoon after taking kids from school I started to cook n steam the bottom layer.

After 20 minutes, yeehaahh… it turned out perfectly. Now the top layer, I waited until 30 minutes.. but the top layer is still not firmed. I asked my hubby to help me to carry out the top steam pot as I wanted to fill up the water. You know what happen? He spilled out part of the top layer! Arghhhh.. and it spilled over his pants. He grumbled n complained about that. I don’t care man.. it’s my kuih that u had spilled out! That is more important in my life (well at that moment).

Deep in my heart I know that my kuih tak menjadi again. So what I did after 20 minutes later, I took out the kuih n scrapped out the top layer which was still not firmed n settled. I can see that partly of it was already firm. I just leave it cool for 1-2 hours.

And alhamdullillah.. When I cut it, it's miracle that it turned out perfectly. I don’t know how n why.. Maybe I should wait a little bit more longer or maybe I have mix the wrong ingredients or maybe just because my hubby had spilled out the top layer :P.

My next mission is to make kuih lapis. I had successfully making a few kuih like lopes, seri muka, bengkang ubi, talam ubi, kuih bakar, n onde-onde and I will never give up making others. Will never give up!

p/s: Boy.. menjadi kuih aku..

ISTANBUL - A controversial decision on whether Turkey’s new constitution will allow headscarves in universities will be left to the prime minister as a commission drafting the charter failed to reach agreement, media reported.

Secularists, including the powerful army, see the use of the headscarf at universities as a threat to the secular order. They accuse the newly re-elected AK Party, whose roots are in political Islam, of trying to undermine secularism, and the new constitution is seen as the next source of tension.

Although Prime Minister Tayyip Erdogan is known to favour lifting the ban, it is not clear which way he will decide now. The AK Party tried to loosen the ban on headscarves after coming to power in 2002 but abandoned the idea after secularist pressure.

Leading newspaper Hurriyet and CNN Turk reported on Sunday that the commission drafting the constitution could not agree on whether the new charter should allow headscarves in universities and so would leave it up to Erdogan.

The draft constitution will be discussed by the party leadership on Wednesday and presented to the public in the next week, AK Party Deputy Chairman Dengir Mir Mehmet Firat told reporters on Sunday, declining to give details on the contents.

‘We have tried to create a constitution that will be accepted by all sectors of society,’ he said after three days of drafting by party members and academics at a country retreat.

Headscarves in mainly Muslim Turkey are banned in public buildings, universities and schools but some 60 percent of women cover their heads and the AK Party’s grassroots supporters want the ban lifted.

Erdogan’s wife wears the headscarf and his daughter studied in the United States where she was allowed to cover up. The wife of President Abdullah Gul—whose candidacy was opposed by the secularists—took Turkey to the European Court of Human Rights over the ban, while his daughter prompted controversy by wearing a headscarf at her graduation ceremony.

Plans to rewrite Turkey’s military era constitution were part of the AK Party’s manifesto for the July 22 parliamentary election, which it won with 47 percent of the vote. The party says the new draft will focus on individual freedom and improving democracy. It is also expected to weaken the powers of the army, which has pushed four governments from power since 1960.

The story of the Freezer

I always wanted to have a freezer at home. When we first moved to Oman, we lived in a small 2 bedrooms apartment. We moved again after a year to a bigger house with 3 bedrooms apartment. And finally, moved again to a landed house – just because to have a compound n area for the kids to play outdoor.

So u can imagine started with a small house, surely with a small fridge. Every time when we went out for groceries, we normally buy foods for the whole week stock. That does not include all the ‘extra’ food for the kids – chocolate, ice cream, cheese, etc… I tried to squeeze in everything nicely in the fridge.

Now about the freezer… My top fridge freezer is not just for my fish n chicken. It is also for the supply that I brought back every year from Malaysia – daun kesum, bunga kantan, petai, ikan masin, daun pandan, daun kunyit, etc…. And after decided n plus minus all the consequences, we agree that we do need another freezer.

After window shopping around at a few shops I ended up bought the freezer from Lulu Hypermarket (the biggest in Muscat, like Giant). Now.. the most annoying, irritating n maddening moment is the delivery process! They promised u today but they didn’t turn up n even call. We have to call them arguing n begging for the delivery. And it seems normal over here because every shops n even government agencies does that!

So after a few arguments we finally got it. But unfortunately the one that they delivered was dented. We insisted them to take it back n change to a new one. And here we go again, waiting n waiting for the replacement. After 3 days, a week, 2 weeks… still same reasons n excuses. It really got on my nerves. I straight away drove to the shop n asked my money back. And Yes! I got it..

That’s how I end up not having a freezer n the desire to have that has gone. Until last night, my friend Umi called me telling that our Bruneian friend, Layla wanted to sell her freezer (she’s moving back to UK). Well.. I was thinking, why not give a look at it.

This morning, I am the happiest person in the world. I got a freezer.. yeah… it is still good n I got it only for RO20.

Gerthy the giraffe

My daughter Nabila has been selected by her teacher to bring back a giraffe named Gerthy over the weekend. Gerthy is a giraffe that has one eye n sore neck. She needs to be cuddled all the time. In fact Nabila was the first student that brought back the giraffe.

She indeed is so happy n never want to be separated from Gerthy. Everywhere she goes, Gerthy will always be with her. She is now in Reception class n so very excited about her new teacher n classroom. She has improved a lot in her reading n writing.

Now at home she will imitate whatever happened at school n did that to her brother. She is the teacher n poor Hakeem has always to follow whatever the big boss said. We do really enjoy looking at both of them.

Acar buah

Mission accomplished! Finally I have managed to cook my acar buah. This is our 'a must' food tradition for our family during ramadhan (my hubby just love it soooo much). I've first learned to make this from my arwah mama, but her acar buah was just super delicious.

Last night I have managed to make quite full amount of acar buah (mcm nak berniaga pulak!) I guess it is more than enough for our family to eat it during sahur n give away to some of our friends.

Tonight we had sahur eating our acar buah.. nyam.. nyam..

Busy, busy, busy

This last few days has been my very very busy day. I just managed to hook up to the internet for a while at late night to check my email. The rest of my days are full with activities.

It started with sending kids to school, doing groceries n not to mention house chores (ooohh.. that never stop!). Yesterday I had coffee morning with all moms from my daughter's class. Get to know session..

Tonight I just came back from my kid's school attending parents meeting teacher evening. I have kids from primary n senior school n I have to be there from 5.00pm - 8.15pm.
Rushing back home n seeing my daughter still waiting for me. Not wanted to sleep until I am at home. Then I cooked special 'mee hailam' for dinner. I wanted to make acar buah for ramadhan but I guess I have to postpone it to tomorrow..

Very tired.. what a day.

When the Bride didn't turn up

I feel sorry for this girl.. is it because she's asking too much for the dowry? Well not everybody can be like Erra Fazira. She only asked for Al-Quran..

Piala Malaysia 2007

I am not really a football fans. But when I got to know that Kedah is in final, I am so very excited. I still remember very long time ago, when Kedah first time got into final (I was in form 5 that time) and they won, the whole Kedah was full of glory n people were non-stop talking about that.

Almost every part of buildings, roadside or even trees were painted with their colors - hijau kuning. You can see the whole town full in green n yellow. The color of glory.

And now again tonight, Kedah will play against Perak. I hope they will win tonight n I know they will. Pulun Kedah Pulun..

Road to Mawaleh

Today my family, Haji, Prof n Nazri had a great lunch at this Yemen's restaurant. The mouth watering delicious nasi briyani with chicken, meet n fish that are cooked in a very traditional way.

It is located at Mawaleh, about 20kms from our place. We had tried a few Arab/local briyani rice and so far this is the best. This restaurant is always pack after 1pm, and sometimes you have to que up for the sitting room.

Over here in Oman in this kind of restaurant, you eat by sitting down on the floor. They will serve the rice in a big tray that u are suppose to share with others. But you can always ask for the individual plate.

It's worth driving all the way there as the food was so finger licking good!. Final weekend briyani before ramadhan..
